Alabama Small Business Owner Still With No State Tax Refund Months Later

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama (WIAT) – An Alabama man is still awaiting his state reimbursement after filing an online claim in March.

Jerry Coley, who runs JC’s Vintage Cars, says his state reimbursement is $ 6,100. He says he hoped to use the funds for his business because, like many in 2020, it was struggling to stay open.

“He fell off a cliff. No one was buying or selling. So we were surviving on repairs and selling parts, ”Coley said.

He says he received his federal return in no time. He says when he still didn’t get it in July, he contacted the Revenue Department about it.

“After that I decided to track him down through the local office and was finally able to verify that the state didn’t have the software to verify the 2020 tax returns,” Coley said.

He says they were still unable to provide a time frame for the full processing of his refund. CBS 42 has contacted the Department of Revenue about this. Someone from the department told us that they were studying the question and that they would have an answer as soon as possible.

Coley believes he’s not the only one facing this issue and worries if it isn’t resolved quickly it could have a drastic impact.

“A case that will have an impact on everyone. Not just a person, ”Coley said.

Once the request for CBS 42 is answered, we will provide an update.
