Back-to-school supplies, clothing coupons available for eligible families

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) – Back-to-school items are already rolling out to stores across the Commonwealth.

In central Virginia, the Santa Fund is in place to help students return to class. It takes its name from the fact that the fundraising campaign takes place in winter.

Caroline Emerson is Vice President of Community Engagement at United Way of Greater Charlottesville. She says glasses, supplies and clothes are all on the list for kids starting the school year. The non-profit organization is behind the funding for the vouchers, providing some of these items for free.

“Children in need are identified by school officials, the child’s teacher, a guidance counselor, principals, the school nurse,” Emerson said.

In a statement to NBC29, a spokesperson for Albemarle County Public Schools said, “Vouchers are $100 and we provide them to families along with a list of stores that will accept the vouchers. The family is required to present receipts for their purchases.

Vouchers are allocated to schools based on the number of children on the free and reduced meal list. Charlottesville, Albemarle, Buckingham, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, Madison, Nelson and Orange counties are all eligible for this programming.

If you need vouchers for your child, Emerson says, contact their school. If you would like to donate to the Santa Claus Fund, click here.
