I read your article and recently found myself in my own buying dilemma. I had purchased several sets of blinds (for quite a bit of money) from a small operator here in my town when my sister came by and noticed she had seen a similar style at Bunnings for much less!

I feel a little bad for the original company, but do I have the right to go back to them and ask for a refund?

The blinds are intact and still in the packaging.

Are you entitled to a refund? No.

Will you get a refund if you ask politely? Maybe.

Under Australian consumer law, your guarantees as a consumer do not apply if you change your mind, find it cheaper elsewhere, or simply decide that you don’t like the product or you don’t need it.

Of course, many businesses of all sizes will have their own refund and return policies, and it doesn’t hurt to ask them politely.

You might be in luck as it looks like the company can still sell the blinds you purchased.

But you don’t have to back up on consumer guarantees.

Interestingly, there are also a few other exceptions that may void your automatic rights to a repair, refund, or replacement.

Companies are not obligated to refund you if you change your mind about what you bought from stores. Despite this, many still will. (Edwina Pickles)

If you were to misuse a product in a way it was not designed for, you would void your rights, similarly if you purchased a product knowing full well that it already had some sort of defect.

Commercial vehicles and trailers are also covered if they are used primarily for transporting goods.
