MOUNDSVILLE — The Marshall County Assessor’s Office wants people to know about some tax cuts they can take advantage of.

“We want residents to be aware of these discounts. We try to keep them informed of rebates so they can see a reduction in their tax bill each year,” Marshall County Assessor Eric Buzzard said Friday.

For example, discounts are granted on vehicles with high mileage. High-mileage checkpoints are scheduled from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Wednesdays at the following locations: August 10, Dallas VFD/Presbyterian Church; August 17, Benwood/McMechen Union Junior High School; and August 24, Cameron City Building.

Checkpoints also take place from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday at the following locations: August 6, John Marshall High School; August 13, 12th Street Girls Softball Field, Moundsville; August 20, W.Va. 88 Sherrard Junior High School.

Any Assistant Appraiser can also check a vehicle’s high mileage from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Marshall County Courthouse through October 1.

Buzzard said the newer a vehicle is, the greater the rebate it receives.

“You would think it would be the opposite, with older vehicles getting a bigger discount. But older vehicles lose value,” he said.

For example, according to the high mileage chart, a 2021 model vehicle should have 30,000 miles or more, while a 2014 or older model should have at least 110,000 miles – plus 15,000 miles per vehicle per year before. 2013.

If a person has more than one vehicle with high mileage, they are not required to bring all the vehicles. They can bring the other vehicle’s mileage information from the appraisal forms.

Regarding taxes on their home, some people benefit from the family exemption. A person must live in and own the accommodation, be at least 65 years old before June 30, 2023, or be permanently or totally disabled.

Buzzard said the homestead exemption can save people between $200 and $400 a year on their property tax bill.

People can fill out an application at the appraiser’s office. Those unable to do so can have it delivered by calling 304-845-1490.

There is also an agricultural rebate, which reduces the taxable value of agricultural land. Farmland is considered at least five acres of land with a production value of at least $1,000.

Buzzard said if someone has less than five acres, their production value must be at least $500. Production on the land can include raising and managing livestock, planting and harvesting crops, vegetable gardens, hay, fruit, berry trees, and wood for home heating or fencing.

Buzzard noted that in the future, he plans to move high-mileage checkpoints to different areas of the county.

“We want to make it as convenient as possible for people to get these discounts,” he said.

“I want to make sure all county residents are aware of every discount offered by my office and the different ways you may be eligible.

Buzzard noted that some requirements to qualify have changed over the years for some discounts. It will continue to publish notices in newspapers to keep them informed of deadlines and requirements to qualify for these discounts.

“I encourage any resident who thinks they might qualify for one of the discounts on offer to contact my office with your questions at 304-845-1490,” he said. “We are here to help all residents of Marshall County.

“Abatement programs like these will help ease some of the tax burden on county ratepayers. I hope homeowners take full advantage of opportunities like these to reduce their future tax bills. please do not hesitate to contact us.”
