State Tax Refunds: Which States Are Sending Refund Checks in August?


It’s no secret that the highest inflation in nearly 50 years is wreaking havoc on people’s coffers. Fortunately, a number of states offer additional support in various forms. These include tax refunds as well as inflation relief checks.

Here is the full list of states offering support.


Governor Gavin Newsom signed the California State Budget which included a $17 billion relief package. Among the measures is a $9.5 billion portion that will send “inflation relief checks” to Golden Staters for up to $1,050 for eligible California residents.

Payments should start going out in October via direct deposit and debit cards.


Residents who filed their 2021 taxes expected to receive up to $800 through the 1992 Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights (TAMBOURINE) Amendment, but now that figure has nearly doubled to $1,500 for joint filers. Solo registrants will receive $750.


Taxpayers who filed a 2020 Delaware state tax return can expect to see $300 “emergency discount“. For those who have not filed a return or if you have further questions about the measure, the Delaware Department of Finance has provided a Frequently Asked Questions page.


Through the Department of Children and Families’ Hope Florida—A Pathway to Prosperity program, select Florida households with children will receive a one-time payment of $450 per child.

To be eligible, families must be receiving Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, be a foster parent or related or unrelated caregiver, or be part of the Guardianship Assistance Program.


Georgian households that filed their 2020 and 2021 tax returns could get between $250 and $500 in the form of a single tax relief depending on the status of the declaration. Peach State’s historic budget surplus made the payments possible.


Starting in late August, filers of 2021 tax returns could receive up to $300 back, but only if they earn less than $100,000. People earning between that figure and $200,000 will receive a $100 payout.


Each taxpayer will receive either $75 or 12% of your Idaho state taxes in 2020, whoever is the greatest. Those who were year-round residents in Idaho in 2020 and 2021 and filed a grocery tax credit or tax return for both years are eligible.


Illinois residents who reported earning less than $200,000 per year or $400,000 per couple filing jointly receive $50 and $100 respectively. A dependent would pocket an additional $100 up to three times.

These will be sent from September 12.


Governor Eric Holcomb announced in June that in addition to the $125 the Hoosiers currently receive from the state taxpayers automatic refund, he wants to use $1 billion from the state budget surplus to send an additional $225. However, these additional payments have not yet passed through the governor’s office.


More than 850,000 Mainers who filed 2021 tax returns will receive direct relief payments of $850 to help cover the rising cost of things. Eligible residents who have not filed a 2021 state tax return can file until October 31 to claim their payment.


Massachusetts has a specific tax law whereby excess tax paid to the government is redistributed to residents. 7% of each person’s tax return would be returned.


As the application period is over, Minnesota frontline workers are in line to receive $750 payout. According to the state Department of Labor and Industry, checks will be mailed to those who are approved and will arrive between Aug. 16 and Aug. 31.

New Jersey

Homeowners earning less than $150,000 will receive $1,500 property tax rebates. Those who earn above this threshold but less than $250,000 will still receive $1,000. Tenants are not left out either. If they earn less than $1,500 per year, they will receive $450.

These payments are not expected to be fast and should be sent by May next year.

New Mexico

All taxpayers, including those who receive the direct payment mentioned above, will receive two equal payments in July and August for a total of $500 for individuals and $1,000 for co-registrants.

Residents who do not file a tax return will not be left out. There is a $20 million pot and people can access it on a first-come, first-served basis.

Income tax refund checks from up to $800 will be sent to taxpayers at the end of November or December 2022, although it may be a few months before they are all sent. The remittances are issued per person, whether you deposited individually or jointly.


From mid-October, the Virginia Department of Taxation will begin sending state residents who filed taxes before July 1 a tax refund of $250 per person. In order to receive the one-time payment, Virginians must file by November 1, 2022. The tax office advises residents who have moved update their mailing address by August 15, also known as ASAP.
