According to the new tariffs proposed, consumers in rural areas will now have to pay Re 1 per unit instead of the current one. ??2 per unit for a metered cased well. For energy efficient tube wells, the rate will be 83 paise per unit instead of the current one. ??1.65 per unit. “Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who is committed to the convenience and prosperity of farmers, has decided to give a 50% discount on electricity tariffs for private tube wells,” said the Office of the Chief Minister (CMO) in a tweet in Hindi.

The state government currently provides grants of up to ??11,000 crore per year to Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) for the supply of cheap electricity to tube wells. The state government will now have to increase the subsidy accordingly.

Earlier this month, Samajwadi Party (SP) national chairman Akhilesh Yadav announced free electricity to farmers for irrigation and 300 units free to all national electricity consumers if his party formed the next government in Uttar Pradesh. Congress also pledged to cut electricity bills in half.
